After staying close to home as COVID ran wild around the country, in 2023 I decided to hit the road again.
This was my first trip with Overseas Adventure Travel for a 16-day small group adventure. We had 16 travelers in our small group from all across the US – from New Jersey to Hawaii.
Davide was our trip leader and we also had two new apprentice trip leaders who were finishing up their training. We also enjoyed local guides for site visits. All in all, it was a fun group with an abundance of smiles and laughter.
One of my biggest take-aways from this adventure was how little I remembered from world history. For example, I did not remember that the country of Italy (as we know it today) is younger than our own country.
Italian Unification was not until 1861. While the regions became unified, regional dialects were still paramount. One event which had a big impact in kickstarting the unification of the language was the introduction of television.
Television did not just become a way to bring people together but also a way to broadcast cultural programs and linguistic models. Still wasn’t until 1928 that textbooks were published uniformly in Italian, and not until 1971 that the Catholic Church approved an Italian Bible.
