Three Storytelling Elements

STORY, VOICE and IMAGE

“Story is an ancient art — but like all art, it can be enhance with modern tools.” Daniel H. Pink, A Whole New Mind

You can use to embrace your narrative and share it with others with written essays, voice recordings, scrapbooks, digital shoeboxes, etc.  In this section we will the instruction we offer to help you create your own 3-MIN Stories for you to share your heart with others.

This short video describes a project that the students of the New Media Center of the University of Maryland Baltimore County did with residents for the Charlestown Retirement Community.

A “3-MIN Story” is a powerful multimedia tool that you can use to tell others about something that is important to you.  Only you and tell your story from your point of view with your own voice.

Our instruction can be either individual or group. All instruction begins with the same foundation work. The three levels indicate the amount of time on the computer.

Foundation

Pre-Instruction

Here are some guidelines that you can use in preparation for creating your 3-MIN Story.  Please bring this with to your first instruction session.  If you are not ready for instruction at this time, feel free to use this to gather your ideas for future use.

Session 1

We will go over the whole process and determine the level of instruction that you would like and set out your individual game plan.  Nest, we will work together on the text for your story — working and re-working it for the strongest impact.

Homework

After Session 1, you will have time to incorporate the ideas that we discussed and trim down your text.  Also, you will need to gather any additional images, video, or music that you would like included in your story.

Session 2

We will go over the changes that you have made and gather any additional images or video. Finally we will create an audio recording to be used as the narration for your 3-MIN Story..

Level 1

At Level 1 workshop, you will do all the work to bring your story, voice, and images together.  You will make decisions on how you visualize your story should look.  After that we will do the video editing for you to pull it all together. – – so no computer skills are needed at Level 1.

Level 2

For Level 2, we help provide introductory instructions for you to use basic video editing software. You provide a computer with the software. For MAC computers, we will work with the iMovie software that comes with your MAC.  For Windows users, we will work with Adobe Premiere Elements.

Level 3

For Level 3, you will be able to get up to speed with the video editing software (either iMovie or Premiere Elements) with little additional instruction.  We will then work together to bring your 3-MIN Story video to life.
